Mastering Resident Evil 4 Remake’s combat is essential to not end up turned into mush for the plague, this involves knowing how and when to use firearms, the knife, and Leon’s martial arts. Remember that these enemies are not the zombies of Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakehere they carry weapons such as pitchforks, axes, mallets, hammers and even ranged weapons such as crossbows.
In this guide I tell you how to use Leon’s tools to effectively combat the enemies of Resident Evil 4 Remake. Some basic tips to be prepared for all threats, including some final bosses.
Firearms in Resident Evil 4 Remake
Firearms are your best friend, but that doesn’t mean you can abuse them John Wick style. Feed them with ammunition It’s not easy and things get more complicated as you increase the difficulty. You have 8 quick access slots for all of them, including pomegranates. You don’t have to cover them all, but plan to make the transition between them quick.
- Precision: You should prioritize accuracy to hit as many bullets as possible. If you stay completely still (body and head), the sight will close and the shot will have a better chance of hitting where you want. The best time to shoot is when the enemies take a breath after running or hitting (and missing, of course).
- Keep moving: Popular belief says that the closer you are, the harder to miss. Wrong. Enemies in Resident Evil 4 Remake move around a lot, dodging and lunging. Being too close only serves to make you nervous and miss shots. It’s best to stay on the move and shoot at medium ranges.
- Dart Gun: The only weapon that has ammo that you can pick up once you kill the enemies. My advice is to only use it against small groups of enemies (2-3) that you can control until you finish them off. Try not to shoot upwards (without the advantage of altitude) and towards places you can’t reach, because you’ll lose your bolts. Upgrade it to the max.
- Powerful weapons: There are larger caliber weapons like the SR M1903 and CQBR rifles, the Broken Butterfly revolver, and (obviously) the RPG/RPG that you should use at very specific times and whose bullets should be treated as gold. My advice is to reserve these weapons and their ammunition for final bosses or special enemies due to their high damage. Using rifle bullets to take out a normal enemy is a waste of ammunition. Shotguns are the only powerful weapons that are exempt from this rule.
- Semi-automatic > automatic: Don’t be fooled, semi-automatic or bolt-action weapons are much better for Resident Evil than automatic weapons. The reason is that you have better control over the ammunition. Also, if you panic, it will be harder for you to fire a magazine in a few seconds. Use semi-automatic weapons, unless you know how to handle moments of tension.
Remember that you can manufacture different types of ammunition with the resources and gunpowder you find. Having a large repertoire of weapons will limit you a lot and some use the same type of ammunition. Control the latter by looking at the total ammunition (not the one you have in the charger). If it repeats, choose between one.
For example, I decided to leave the SR M1903 rifle behind when I got the CQBR (burst) rifle. I complemented it with the Dart Pistol, Matilda, the Riot Shotgun and a grenade launcher for the final boss. The TMP and LE 5 sub-submarines seemed like a bullet drain to me and I didn’t use them, even though they use their own ammo.
Knives and martial arts in Resident Evil 4 Remake
If firearms are important, knives are much more important. Start with your Combat Knife and you can get up to two more knives: Survival Knife and Primal Knife. These are permanent: they stay in your inventory even if they break. On the other hand, you can find Kitchen Knives and Boot Kniveswhich you can use like normal knives and/or to craft ammunition, although they are consumed when broken.
The Combat Knife, Survival Knife, and Primary Knife can be upgraded and repaired at the Peseta …
- Can use the knife as a weapon to hit enemies and objects. How long enemies can resist will depend on the type of enemy and the power of the knife itself. It is not the most recommended use, but it can get you out of a tight spot.
- Block and counterattack: The knife is also used to block enemy attacks (axes, clubs, pitchforks, other knives…) and to counterattack if an enemy grabs you from the front. If he grabs you from behind, you must mash a button to free yourself.
- Stun and Finishers: The knife can also be used to finish off enemies, especially if they are going to be mutated by the plague. You can stun enemies by shooting them in the head several times, but you can also shoot their legs so they fall and finish them off with the knife. On the other hand, the final bosses usually have a phase in which they are stunned and you must use the knife to destroy them.
- Blinding Granada: These grenades are very useful for getting rid of “chasing enemies”, for taking out some enemies that hate light, and for controlling large groups of enemies. And here’s a trick: you can finish off any blinded enemies with the knife. Chaining several finishers together is great.
- Stealth: Resident Evil 4 Remake features a stealth system. It’s not the best in the universe, but it does the trick. You can finish off enemies while stealthy with the knife. Even strong enemies (with big hammers) go down in one go on normal difficulty. You can also execute enemies with the knife if you manage to get behind them.
All these actions consume durability of your knivesexcept in the case of the Primordial Knife because it is infinite. martial arts Leon’s attacks are an alternative to using the knife in many cases. You can kick stunned enemies. It’s not as lethal (sometimes it is), but it allows you to get away and get some space.
My advice is that you prioritize the use of knives and martial arts about shooting with firearms whenever possible. Keep a close eye on the HUD for stun marks and rapidly press the buttons assigned to both moves to execute them as quickly as possible. You’ll spend quite a bit of money to repair the knife at first, but you’ll save a lot of ammo.
