Dota 2 breaks Online Twitch viewer records in ESL One Los Angeles Leave a comment

While winning ESL One Los Angeles Online was an amazing feat, Dota 2 broke its own record for peak viewers on for a Major this season.

Yesterday we witnessed the culmination of ESL One Los Angeles Online’s European and CIS segment, as the grand finals gave us some brilliant Dota 2 action. After beating OG once in the group stages, then again in the upper bracket finals, VP were looking to stamp their name back into the upper echelons of Dota 2 – and they did so, claiming a 3-2 victory in the grand finals of the event. However, while this was an amazing accomplishment for the team, who have not seemed at their best in recent times, it was the community which broke a record.

According to the chart above from Esports Charts, ESL One Los Angeles Online’s Grand Final reached a peak Twitch viewership of a little over 500,000. This number, while probably unimpressive when it comes to The International event, is much higher than that of any previous Dota 2 Pro Circuit Majors which took place before the shutdown.

As can be seen above, both DreamLeague Season 13, as well as the MDL Chengdu Major received far less viewers – and this is not even counting the numbers of viewers in China, who don’t have access to Twitch in their region. While CounterStrike Global Offensive may be overtaking Dota 2 in peak player numbers, the long running MOBA is definitely still creating a large amount of hype. With the DPC being postponed and cancelled, it seems that the community is still happy to enjoy the pro teams go at it in any and all online tournaments.

Although ESL One Los Angeles Online may be over, Dota 2 online action is popping up everywhere with tournaments such as the such as the Beyond the Summit Pro Series and WePlay! Pushka League, among others. We are all eager to see just how much the peak viewer count will change at the next event – and if VP have returned to their former dominance.
