Mega Charizard Y shines with a colossal Special Atk (159) coupled with a talent (Drought) considerably increasing its power of Fire. He is a great ally for Sun Team, but is an excellent wallbreaker in his own right. He also has a very high Sp Def, which coupled with his dual typing + Drought allows him to counter Bulky very effectively. Waterand this even without defensive investment (it is naturally capable of absorbing up to a Hydrocannon of Keldeo Choice Spec!). Its dual type, however, makes it very vulnerable to Rock Trapsand his speed (100) makes him incapable of facing the fastest sweepers. He therefore requires a little support in order to be appreciated at his true value, but well surrounded he will be able to show formidable efficiency.

Special Ability: Drought |
Flamethrower / Deflagration |

Nature : Shy / Modest |
Sun Lancer |

EV: Atk Sp 252 / Def Sp 4 / Sp 252 |
Earthquake / Exploforce / Ancient Power |

IV: Maxed | Landing / Dracochoc |
The EVs are distributed in order to maximize the offensive presence of our reptile, and to keep odd HP at level 100, which is crucial in order to be able to switch twice on the Rock Traps without being knocked out. The choice between Timid/Modest is up to individual taste, but keep in mind that the power gain from the nature is negligible especially under Sun, and that the Timid nature allows him to outrun some threats that might otherwise be problematic: Manaphy, Jolly Excadrill, Charizard X, Kyurem-B for example.
Flamethrower / Deflagration is your main attack, and either will do massive damage to anything that isn’t called Lucky you / Leuphoria. The choice between the two mainly depends on your risk appetite and the number of PP available. The difference in power between the two is not huge, and Deflagration brings almost no OHKO or 2HKO compared to Flamethrowerand the risk of missing a Deflagration is bigger than missing a KO with Flamethrower. The notable differences are as follows: Deflagration + Timid nature allows to 2HKO Mega-Altaria 0 HP / 0 Sp Def at over 90%, and with the Modest nature it allows to 2HKO at over 97% Nympahli 252 HP / 252+ Sp Def and Latias 72 HP / 0 Sp Def after the Rock Traps (No, Mega Charizard Y don’t laugh no way).
Sun Lancer effectively completes the coverage, and allows to reach all the Bulky Water for considerable damage.
Exploforce And Earthquake are good options to get rid of Tyranitar And Heatran. Exploforce is an OHKO on most versions of TyranitarHowever Earthquake is more effective against Heatran invested in Sp Def, even without EV and a negative nature.
Ancient Power is an interesting option to get rid of Flambusard and some Charizard opposing if you already have counters to the threats mentioned above.
Dracochocalthough inferior to previous options, provides useful coverage against Lati@s And Carchacrok.
Landing allows to recover from a switch on the Rock Traps and/or a cashed attack. Considering the excellent Bulk of Mega Charizard Y and its ability to switch to a number of well-anticipated special or even physical attacks, this is a significant asset. Namely that Latias with 252 in Sp Atk and a Life Orb do not OHKO it with Draco Meteor (82-97%), which allows our friend to regenerate on it thanks to the drop in Sp Atk caused by Draco Meteor and thus beat him in 1V1.
In summary Mega Charizard Y is a genius wallbreaker, very few Pokémon can boast of switching to it safely, the best being without doubt: Lucky you / Leuphoria, Latias, Flambusard (Special Defense version), Mega Charizard X (Special Defense version), Mega-Altaria (versions invested in PV), and Toad. Some of these “counters” will not be able to fulfill their role properly if damage has been inflicted on them beforehand, and for some it is difficult to defeat them in 1V1. If your opponent does not have any of these Pokémon, it is a safe bet that Mega Charizard Y will quickly make big holes in their team with a big blow Flamethrower in the gums. Besides the Pokémon that can switch to it, Mega Charizard Y will not be able to face powerful Pokémon Electric as Raikou Or Fulgurisand will struggle against TyranitarOr Demeteros-T if he has a Choice Scarf. Fast sweepers will also be able to revenge kill him without any problem.
Some Pokémon pair very well with Mega Charizard Yfirst of all Tyranitar : he poses the Rock Traps and launches the Sandstorm which allows the climate to be reset so that Mega Charizard Y has its 5 Sun towers for sure. Tyranitar can also trap Latias with Pursuitundo Flambusard whatever the version and even burned (Rock Blade with 0 Atk burned vs. Flambusard 248 HP / 0 Def: 102.5 – 120.8%), if scarfed he can also OHKO them Charizard Y And X opponents, and if it is slower than Toad he will be able to place the Sandstorm in 1v1. Having a Spinner / Defoger is beneficial, and given the resolutely offensive nature of Mega Charizard Y a Spinner will be preferred so as not to lose our own Entry Hazards. Staross And Minotaupe are the best choices. The first one will be able to undo Toad with the adapted attack (Psy Shock against the Sp Def version, Thunder against other versions), and seriously damage Mega-Altaria. The second forms a very interesting core with Tyranitar : taking advantage of Baigne Sable he will be able to undo Mega-Altariaall Pokemon Fire adverse and Lucky you / Leuphoria thanks to his immunity to the statuses they have. Minotaupe will appreciate in return seeing Airmure And Noacier reduced to ashes. Cizayox is also a good party, facilitating the placement of Mega Charizard Y thanks to U-turnand not fearing Tyranitar Or Demeteros-T. A niche option is to play it with PC Ice And Nitrocharge : the goal is to break the Force Belt of Carchacrok and then speed past it and OHKO it. This can be useful if your opponent uses Carchacrok as a starter and chooses to pose the Rock Traps in the first round thinking you are safe. This also immunizes Mega Charizard Y from the revenge kill of Démétéros-T Scarfer, because the latter will then be slower and will be OHKOed.
Useful in the team: – Tyranitar – Staross – Minotaupe |
Examples of checks and counters: – Latias – Lucky you – Flambusard |
