They turn a broken laptop into a portable console (with Half-Life 2!)

Other projects of this type have been carried out using the hardware of the brand’s laptops Frameworkwhich allows you to create completely modular laptops. However, in both cases it requires purchasing hardware, so the final price of the project is much more expensive than any portable console.

However, the most original project, at least so far, is the one carried out by a young man, Marcin Plaza, who used the parts of a laptop to build a portable console with an ultra-wide format, nothing like a 16:9 screen. , with a form factor that completely differs from what we can imagine when we talk about a portable console.

Marcin had been thinking for some time about the idea of what he could do with the hardware found inside the laptop. Lenovo Yoga 730 2 in 1 whose screen had passed into the afterlife.

Inside the equipment, there is the processor Intel Core i5-8250Uwith integrated graphics Intel UHD 620 and 8 GB of RAM. Obviously, this hardware is not compatible with almost any current game, however, it is perfect for older games like stardew valley, Terraria either Half-Life 2 game that was recently adapted to the ultrawide format.

This 2-in-1 device is capable of rotating the screen to place it behind the keyboard, so I already had half a project done and where the main problem was finding a screen that adapts to this design.

The panel you have used to carry out this project is one of 12.7 inches with 3:1 format. This has a resolution of 2880 x 864 and has a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

To replace the keyboard part and make it fit the same shape and size of the screen, Martin was considering several designs. He finally built a new keyboard from scratch using a 3D printer using nylon as a material for its excellent thermal properties, however, he says that if he had to recreate it, he would use ABS or plastic as it is stronger and offers a stronger structure.

Finally he implemented an array of 42 buttons for typing, along with a touchpad on the right side to rotate the camera, 6 buttons on the left side that allow you to interact with the character’s movement and another 2 on the top of the touchpad to perform actions.

As for the operating system, since it is an 8th generation Intel processor, it has had no problem installing Windows 11although a light Linux distribution or even Steam OS It would be a better option to get the most out of the equipment due to its limited hardware.

As it is a design created specifically for a very specific laptop model, it has not published the project so that other users can do so.
