Ubisoft: Could make a radical decision for its latest free game

Ubisoft is reportedly having trouble with its latest big free-to-play game and is apparently ready to make a radical decision. The news is clearly not very good…

Ubisoft definitely doesn’t have much luck with its games. For a while now, the company has been pretty shaken up. Internal problems, games cancelled, postponed or put in an artificial coma (hello Beyond Good & Evil 2, you who we haven’t seen for so long). Even some of the publisher’s recent releases haven’t been without their problems. While Star Wars Outlaws is an excellent surprise, Skull and Bones, a long-standing Arlesienne, hasn’t really shone. So when the first attempts at XDefiant drove players crazy, it was a done deal… until now.

Ubisoft’s Latest Free Game Is In The Sauce

Another shadow on the horizon is that Ubisoft’s free game is losing its players at high speed. Although well received upon its release, the game that was presented as a real Call of Duty Killer is losing speed, a lot of speed, as reported by Tom Henderson, who went to gather some information from sources close to Ubisoft. According to Henderson’s information, the game is struggling to reach 20,000 active players. on its servers, which is well below the targets. As a result, Ubisoft would apparently be ready to give up. His sources would have told him that if Ubi San Francisco did not manage to attract more players with its upcoming Season 3, support would be cut off. In other words, XDefiant may well be in the hot seat.

XDefiant soon dead and buried?

As the informant recalls, Ubisoft had recently laid off several dozen people linked to the studios. Still according to Henderson’s sources, the stress is starting to really be felt in the corridors, some think that other heads could roll soon. We’re not there yet, but the fact is that for XDefiant, things don’t smell very good. If it were to liquidate the Activision license, it’s still Call of Duty Black Ops 6 that risks hurting Ubisoft’s free FPS. The giant and undisputed king of FPS is arriving in a few weeks while season 2 of Ubi’s shooter will be booming, which is rather bad timing. It remains to be seen to what extent the release of the behemoth, now in the Xbox stable, will impact the follow-up of XDefiant, and if Ubisoft will take the radical decision to stop the costs with the game.

As a reminder, XDefiant is a completely free game available on PS5, Xbox Series and PC, but also on PS4 and Xbox One.
