We met MG’s new electric car, the MG S9, which ‘charges’ in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

The MG stand at the Geneva Motor Show is full. As proof, the Chinese brand has just introduced the MG S9, an electric car that aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y, in addition to its new luxury brand IM. It remains to be seen whether it will arrive in Europe.

The Geneva Motor Show has just opened. Even though all eyes are on the Renault 5 E-Tech, other new features are also interesting.

For example, the MG stand not only showcases luxury brands such as the IM L6 and IM LS6 but also other electric vehicles not available in Europe. Among them, the one we found was the large ‘fastback’ SUV MG S9.

Fashionable Style

The most important thing to know is that the MG S9 is not new. It has been sold in China under the name Rising Auto R7 since February 2023. Rising Auto is part of the SAIC group, which also includes MG, and the R7 was renamed simply MG upon its release in Europe.

So, it comes as no surprise when you spot the MG S9 as it adopts the look of the R7 step by step. The steeply sloping roofline, a bit similar to the Tesla Model Y or Peugeot E-3008, allows for a very promising aerodynamic coefficient (Cd) of 0.238.

But the MG S9 is bigger than a Tesla or a Peugeot. It is 4.90m long and 1.92m wide.

If you look closely, you’ll notice very tapered optics connected by strips at the front and back, a bit reminiscent of the Marvel R. In short, it’s not surprising, but it’s not fundamentally ugly.

Inside, we encounter a dashboard that is immediately reminiscent of the Hyperscreen installed in luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicles such as the EQS and EQS SUVs.

So MG adopted the idea of a massive 43-inch glass panel hiding three screens. One is 10.25 inches behind the steering wheel, the center one is 12.3 inches, and the other is 10.05 inches for the passenger. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Speaking of passengers, the generous dimensions of this electric SUV seem to benefit passenger space, including a very comfortable rear seat area. Trunk size and presence or absence of a trunk frunk The front remains unknown.

Technical Characteristics: Not Revolutionary, but Compatibility with Battery Exchange

The example presented in Geneva presented a 90 kWh battery capable of powering this MG S9 for 536 km according to WLTP standards. The 250 kW/340 hp engine allows the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Without more information, the Chinese site tells us that the Rising Auto R7 is equipped with a 77kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery and, more interestingly, like the Nio, it is compatible with battery swaps. According to the notation, the exchange will be completed in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. It is not yet known whether this solution will be installed in Europe.

The price of this MG S9 is not yet known. Chinese replicas sell for 189,900 to 229,900 yuan (roughly 24,300 to 29,400 euros), but we know that European prices are systematically higher. Information about his arrival in France has not yet been filtered.

MG S9: A Tesla Model Y Rival with a Twist?

The MG S9 has grabbed headlines for its sleek design, spacious interior, and impressive features. But what truly sets it apart is its battery swapping technology, promising a full charge in a mere 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This could be a game-changer, eliminating the need for lengthy charging stops and potentially revolutionizing the electric car ownership experience.

However, it’s important to note that this technology is still in its early stages, and it’s unclear if MG will offer battery swapping in the USA. Regardless, the S9 boasts a respectable 536 km (333 miles) WLTP range from its 90 kWh battery, ensuring ample range for most everyday needs.

Under the hood, the S9 packs a punch with a 250 kW (340 hp) motor, propelling it from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in a brisk 5.8 seconds. Inside, the S9 impresses with a Mercedes-inspired Hyperscreen layout, featuring three high-resolution displays for the driver, infotainment system, and passenger entertainment.

While the official price and release date for the USA hasn’t been announced, the S9’s Chinese counterpart, the Rising Auto R7, starts at around $24,300. Considering the typically higher European and US prices, we can expect the S9 to be priced competitively within the electric SUV segment.

The MG S9 emerges as a compelling option for those seeking a feature-rich, stylish, and potentially revolutionary electric SUV. With its fast charging capabilities, spacious interior, and competitive price point, the S9 could give established players like Tesla a run for their money, especially if battery swapping becomes readily available in the US market. Stay tuned for further updates as we await official confirmation on the S9’s arrival in the USA.
