Who is Mira Murati, the new CEO of OpenAI

Mira Murati, born in 1988 in Vlorë, Albania, is an engineer and business executive who took on the role of interim CEO of OpenAI this Friday after Sam Altman’s departure from the company. At age 16, he left Albania to study and graduate from Pearson College UWC, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Murati earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth College in 2012.

Murati began his career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, followed by his work at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. Subsequently, spent three years at Tesla as senior product manager for Model before joining Leap Motion. In 2018, Murati joined OpenAI and was promoted to CTO, leading key projects such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex, while overseeing the company’s research, product, and security teams.

Regulation of Artificial Intelligence

As AI regulation advocateMurati argues that governments must play a more active role in this area. On November 17, 2023, he assumed the role of interim CEO of OpenAI, succeeding Sam Altman, who was abruptly fired. OpenAI management clarifies that his position is temporary, while they find a permanent CEO.

The new CEO of OpenAI, Mira Murati, has played a crucial role in the development of Artificial Intelligence in the company. The OpenAI board announced that Sam Altman will step down as CEO and will be replaced by current CTO Mira Murati.

Career at OpenAI

Look Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 and has held various roles, including Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships from June 2018 to December 2020, and Senior Vice President of Research, Product and Partnerships from December 2020 to May 2022. Since then, she has assumed the role of Chief Technology Officer , leading teams dedicated to innovative AI projects such as DALL-E.

At OpenAI, Murati has overseen the marketing and improvement of products through human feedback. He was an integral part of the leadership teams that developed the revolutionary ChatGPT and DALL-E systems. In 2022, a preview version of ChatGPT, an AI designed to hold conversations and compose texts, was released. Murati sees ChatGPT as an opportunity for education, although he highlights the need to establish rules and limits in its daily use.

Besides, Murati and his team created DALL-E, an AI that generates works of art from given guidelines. He believes that the regulation of Artificial Intelligence should fall into the hands of governments rather than companies, and advocates the active participation of philosophers, humanists, artists and social scientists in collective reflection on this issue.
