This is the LGA1851 socket

Intel no longer changes sockets every year and now has at least two generations of processors. This was always possible as long as the pin count was shared between processor generations, but the company prevented it.

More pins for new processors

The Intel LGA 1851 socket is unknown as it was previously leaked for the commercially called Arrow Lake-S. Core Ultra 200. In principle, these processors will not arrive before 2025, so it is important to note that this is not a short-term socket change.

But the truth is that the first Intel LGA1 851 socket boards will be released this year. This is the socket that Meteor Lake-PS processors will use. embedded solutions. This chip was developed specifically for workloads involving artificial intelligence, especially test and development tasks. These processors are complemented by integrated graphics. intel arc and NPU core Dedicated servers that accelerate these types of workloads.

We’ve seen the first real images of this socket thanks to the MI1002 motherboard. Thanks to this, we know that this socket is exactly the same as the LGA 1700 and both have the same size (45 x 37.5 mm). I simply increased the pin count and modified the lock grooves to prevent “old” processors from being installed.

Key features of this new LGA 1851 socket include:

  • All processors released by the company must be supported by 2026.
  • Only compatible with DDR5, support for DDR4 is discontinued.
  • Motherboards equipped with the 800 series chipset are released.
  • Native compatibility with DDR5 memory operating at 6,400 MHz.
  • Increased PCIe 5.0 lines through CPU and PCH.
  • Supports the new Arrow Lake-S processors for desktop computers.
  • It will be released in the second quarter of 2024 and will initially only apply to embedded systems.

There seem to be some pretty interesting aspects, including the end of DDR4 RAM support. Intel processors support DDR4 and DDR5, mainly depending on the motherboard. Since Ryzen 7000 only supports DDR5, AMD’s strategy is very different.

Arrow Lake-S Overview

We already know a few things about the new Intel processors. In line with the company’s new strategy, the name will be Core Ultra 200. It also includes NPU, a new AI core required to use Copilot on Windows.

On the other hand, P-Core’s L2 cache is said to increase to 3MB per core. We also know that we will get better performance in games by integrating Alchemist graphics. Adamanite LLC is integrated for Tile GPUs. Lastly, we know that these processors will be released in 8+16, 6+8 and 8+0 core configurations (the first number is the P-core and the second is the E-core).
