33% more processors are sold, but AMD and Intel fall in sales, how can that be?

In recent years, many people claimed that we had reached the post-PC era where tablets were replacing PCs, especially in the home environment. However, the pandemic arrived and something that PC users already knew was demonstrated: a tablet cannot replace a PC never.

While it is true that, during the years prior to the pandemic, PC sales decreased considerably in favor of tablets, after the coronavirus, the market has completely changed, with PC sales increasing and tablet sales decreasing.

The latest proof is found in the CPU shipment figures corresponding to the last quarter and published by the JPR media. According to these figures, CPU shipments from both Intel like amd have increased by 33% compared to the first quarter of 2023, reaching 62 million units distributed.

CPU shipments rise

However, shipment figures are down by 9.4% compared to the last quarter of 2023, a common decline in this market, due to the Christmas season and the not excessive supply of equipment with the latest generation processors. If we talk about CPUs, we have to talk about processors for home use (desktop and laptop) and processors for servers.

Once again, sending Laptop CPUs continues to dominate the market with a share of 73%, a market where we can find a large number of new options that include NPU to perform AI tasks. This figure should not surprise us considering that everything, especially in companies, is moving towards AI.

This figure is the highest in the last year, since, in the first quarter of 2023, the share of CPU shipments was 68%, which represents a 5 point rise, growth that has skyrocketed in the last three months, where the share was 69%. It is clear that the movements of Intel and AMD with the range of processors for AI laptops It is bearing fruit.

With the launch of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon ARM architecturewe will see how both Intel and AMD share the market share, since this manufacturer’s solution satisfies the AI, graphics and power needs for both companies and individuals.

Shipments of processors with integrated graphics have also experienced growth of 30% in the last year, reaching 56 million units. In this sense, AMD’s solution with its APU has been much more successful than Intel with the Iris range, since it has allowed it to take away 3% of its market share in the last year, going from 15% at the beginning of 2023 to the current 18%.

iGPU shipments Q1 2024

Where the figures don’t look so good is the Server CPUs. According to this same report, sales of server processors have decreased by 17% in the last year. Most likely, this decrease in server CPU shipments is due to the fact that companies are waiting for the launch of the new range EPYC processors with Zen 5 architecture from AMD and Xeon from Intel, which are expected before the end of the year, so this market will also continue to fall in the second quarter of this year.
