In the 1980s, at the height of the Cold War in Moscow, a young Russian developer named Alexey Pajitnov worked at the Computer Science Research Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Passionate about programming and puzzles, this true computer genius took full advantage of the capabilities of the Russian Electronika 60 computer by creating small games. One day, he decided to buy a puzzle, the pentomino, which gave him a brilliant idea! Inspired by the latter, Tetris was born, a name derived from the fusion between “tetraminos” (a geometric figure composed of four squares) and “tennis”, his favorite sport. At first it was simply an internal project, but it quickly gained popularity among Soviet programmers and researchers. Alexey Pajitnov was far from suspecting the disproportionate scale that his game would take on!
