They create a PS5 “tablet edition” that works better than the original PS5

Since its launch in 2020, the PlayStation has been characterized by offering a much larger design than its predecessor. While it is true that the Slim version reduces the size somewhat, it is still a console that requires a lot of space to install. The DIY Perks YouTube channel set out to reduce the size of the PS5 to a minimum, but it didn’t stop there, since it also added an OLED screen.

If you want to know how to create a PS5 in tablet version with a built-in screen, we invite you to continue reading.

They convert PS5 from a portable console with a screen

One of the reasons why the PlayStation 5 is so large is due to the cooling system that the console uses to reduce the temperature of the components.

Refrigeration system

In fact, the board that manages the console is the component that takes up the least, so the first challenge that this YouTube channel faced was to reduce the components used to cool the console and be able to build a tablet version with an integrated screen.

What caught the most attention was the heat sink main console, a copper tube heatsink that has a rather strange design and takes up a large amount of space inside the console. The solution to this problem was to replace it with two shorter and wider heatsinks that offered the same cooling capacity.

Since it is a copper heatsink, it was no problem to make holes in it to put some aluminum guides and place it on the right and left side of the plate and not on top of the plate, considerably reducing the thickness of the assembly compared to the original design. But, obviously, it doesn’t end there, and the next step was to find a method to capture the heat of the processor.

The solution to this problem was to use several copper pipes sealed that include a liquid inside that facilitates heat transmission from one external to another. As the liquid heats up, it condenses in the area where it is less hot. On top of the processor they placed a copper plate (nickel-plated like the PS5) to join the copper tubes and which extend to the two heatsinks, using liquid metal to fix the plate.

A conventional thermal leg was used to fix the copper tubes. To move the heat out, the PS5’s gigantic fan was replaced with 3 fans like those used in high-end laptops that dissipate heat in two directions, up to the two installed heatsinks. With this design, at full performance, the PS5 reaches a temperature of 42 degrees, which gave room to reduce the speed of the fans to reduce the noise they generate.

3D casing

Before manufacturing the case, for which he used a 3D printer, since it was a PS5 in tablet format with a built-in screen, he added a subwoofer With two 5-watt drivers, more than enough power to enjoy decent sound quality. The case even has a side support to tilt the console and be able to play in a much more comfortable way and with greater stability.

OLED panel

The resulting model was a much smaller console than even the PS5 Slim that was released in late 2023. The last step was to include a screen, the easiest step of all. The easiest solution was to use a LCD panel of any monitor, however, the quality of these panels is very far from what any can offer. OLED panel panel that offers greater brightness and more vivid colors.

The screen used in this project came from a laptop Alienware with an OLED panel from a laptop that had stopped working, since the possibility of finding this type of panels independently on the market is practically impossible. This panel takes up very little space, so the thickness of the design was barely increased.

Power supply

The last step was to replace the PS5’s gigantic power supply with a gallium nitride charger, a much smaller charger that offers the power that the PS5 needs. The charger is not attached to the console, as it would spoil the design and make the whole unit larger. The power cable that goes to the console was covered in a white sleeve so as not to break the static of the black and white design of the console.
