The list of Macs that will have an M4 processor and when they will do it

The new iPad Pro won’t be the only Apple device to include an M4 chip. The Cupertino company plans completely update your Mac line to integrate this new chip—and other variants of it—in each and every one of the models currently available, in order to provide them with AI functions, among other advantages.

This has been stated by Mark Gurman, from Bloomberg, in a post on X (Twitter) in relation to the launch of the M4 chip available in the new iPad Pro. The journalist, who usually reveals information about Apple with a high success rate, assures that the company plans to launch a new mac minia renewed iMac and new MacBook Pro with M4 chip ends of this same year.

It is not clear, however, what exact processor the different models will include. It is likely that both the Mac mini and the iMac will be updated with the same processor included in the iPad Pro announced just a few days ago, while the MacBook Pro could arrive with a slightly more powerful M4 Pro chip. In any case, It wouldn’t be strange to see a MacBook Pro with a standard M4. In fact, Apple offers an option with an M3 chip for current laptops with the Pro surname.

What about the rest of Apple’s Macs? Gurman says the company could update the MacBook Air with an M4 chip in spring 2025. It makes sense considering that Apple just announced new MacBook Airs with M3 processors. It will not be until the end of 2025 when we see new Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M4 Pro and M4 Ultra chips.

The list, therefore, would be as follows.

  • Mac mini with M4: end of 2024.
  • iMac with M4: end of 2024.
  • MacBook Pro with M4: end of 2024.
  • MacBook Air with M4: spring 2025.
  • Mac Pro with M4: end of 2025.
  • Mac Studio with M4: end of 2025.

The M4 chip that will come to Macs is ready for AI

Precisely, one of the main improvements of the M4 chip, is its ability to execute more advanced artificial intelligence tasks. To do this, the company has included in this processor a updated neural engine capable of performing 38 billion operations per second, which would allow processes such as object recognition or real-time translation to be executed completely fluidly.

Additionally, Apple is expected to present new artificial intelligence features with macOS 15, the next version of the operating system for the Mac. Rumors highlight that the firm would be working on an alternative to Google’s ChatGPT and Gemini, as well as integrating AI into Spotlight, the search engine integrated into its operating systems, and in applications such as Apple Music or your office suite.
