OpenAI CEO says ChatGPT sucks, but with GPT-5 things will change

Artificial intelligence, today, is little more than a parrot that repeats things it has learned. It’s not something we say, Sam Altman himself, CEO of OpenAI, says it when he refers to GPT-4, the base model of ChatGPT. He also wanted to make it clear that GPT-5 It is “really good, materially better.”

We are seeing how the industry wants us to adopt artificial intelligence at a rapid pace. The best example is Copilot, the AI solution developed by Microsoft and integrated into Windows. The funny thing about this intelligent assistant is that it is based, precisely, on GPT-4.

Additionally, you should know that the cost of operating ChatGPT It’s about $700,000 a day, which is stupid. But this cost does not seem to be important, since the concern is usually that this technology offers greater capabilities. Simply, the aim is to improve technology so that it is useful to users, no matter what the cost.

They have sold us a “dumb” AI

Sam Altman He is the most critical of his artificial intelligence, which he has criticized on several occasions. He repeated it at Stanford University, where he gave a talk and spoke clearly about his technology. The CEO says that “GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again.”

You should know that he previously said that his model “stinks a little.” Right at that time there were rumors about GPT-5, the new model they were working on. Altman even said that they were working on something “really good, materially better.”

Just in the talk at Stanford he was asked about the cost of executing these models and how it is capitalized. The answer is a bit, well, get out somewhere:

I think giving people really capable tools and letting them figure out how they’re going to use them to build the future is a very good and very valuable thing, and I’m very willing to bet on their ingenuity. Everyone in the world needs to figure out what to do about it. There’s probably some more business-minded person than me at OpenAI somewhere who’s worried about how much we’re spending, but I’m not.

Asked directly about the estimated $520 million cost of ChatGPT in 2023, Altman commented that GPT-4 is “a bit embarrassing, at best.” He has also highlighted that they are working on improving the performance and accuracy of LLM for future models.

He has also said that with “a high degree of scientific certainty that GPT-5 will be much smarter than GPT-4.” He has also said that GPT-6 It will be substantially better than GPT-5, obviously.

We must not forget the problems that existed within OpenAI last year. Altman was expelled from his own company by its management in a conflict that got out of hand. Hours later, Microsoft announced his signing. Shortly before, all OpenAI workers announced their departure in solidarity with their former CEO.

So much was the pressure on OpenAI that they were forced to reverse Altman’s dismissal. A rather embarrassing situation that seemed more like a war of egos than anything else. The one who was hurt was Microsoft, which was already rubbing its hands with his signing and his team.
