The name of the next generation of AMD APUs for laptops is leaked

Buying a laptop, especially if we are looking for a high-end device with a lot of autonomy and high performance, is becoming a real headache. The number of manufacturers offering options on the market is increasingly larger, with models from Intel, AMD and Qualcomm, once it has officially presented the range of Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors with ARM architecture.

ASUS will be the first laptop manufacturer to implement these new processors in the range of laptops that it will present in a few days, although, as we have previously, it will not be the only one since both Microsoft, HP, Dell and Lenovo will also bet on this new architecture for PC.

Speaking of Lenovo, this manufacturer has just leaked, probably inadvertently or intentionally to capture headlines like this article, what will be the name of the next generation of APU that it implements in the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5. We are talking about the Ryzen 8050the next generation of AMD Strix Point APUs.

This information has been made known through an advertising brochure to which the Twitter user @Technically has had access and where we can see some details of the next generation of Lenovo laptops, within the range ThinkPad T14 Gen 5.

We are talking about a laptop with a 14-inch screen available with the AMD Ryzen Pro 8040 Hawn Point and with the 8050 Strix Point APU. This model falls within the laptops focused on the use of AI, by incorporating the Ryzen AI NPU, a trend that all laptop manufacturers will follow in the future, and that, at some point, will also reach desktop processors .

As for the specifications, as we can see in this advertising brochure, the device will be available with a maximum of 64 GB of DDR5 memory, it has support for next-generation WiFi (without specifying whether it is Wi-Fi 6E either Wi-Fi 7). The screen has a maximum brightness of 400 nits, is made with recycled elements (maintaining Lenovo’s commitment to the environment) and is designed to offer long autonomy.

Focusing on the name, the term Pro means that AMD will have two versions of the APU Strix Point when it is launched on the market. Regarding the 5 in the model number, he points out that the architecture used is Zen 5, an architecture that should launch with the Ryzen 9050, but, if this information is true, it means that AMD has changed its plans.

This new range of APUs must incorporate up to 12 cores Zen 5 and Zen 5C and with 16 computing units RDNA 3 and the new ones Neuronal Processing Units (NPU) XDNA 2 AI with up to 50 TOPS of computing power.

It should be remembered that the requirements that Microsoft established to use Copilot locally in Windows place this figure at 40 TOPS, the same figure currently offered by the new generation of Qualcomm processors with ARM architecture and that Intel should offer in the next generation of processors. of the Core Ultra range that will be presented throughout this year.
